J'ouvert vs. Parade Day

J'ouvert vs. Parade Day

If you're new to Carnival, you'll quickly hear two words:

J'ouvert and Mas.

While both are part of Carnival, they're completely different experiences.

J'ouvert

J'ouvert takes place before sunrise.

People gather while it's still dark, covered in paint, mud, oil or powder depending on the island and tradition. It's less about costumes and more about freedom, music and pure energy.

Nobody is worried about looking perfect.

Everyone is there to have fun.

That's exactly why the MelanMas ONYX Collection was inspired by J'ouvert—the beauty found in the darkness before sunrise.

Parade Day

Parade Day is where you'll see the elaborate costumes, feathers, jewels and sections filling the streets.

This is the day most people picture when they think of Carnival.

You'll spend hours dancing, walking and celebrating, so comfort matters just as much as style.

The right fishnets, shoes and accessories can make the difference between enjoying every moment or counting the minutes until it's over.

Melan Guide Tip 💛

Pack a small bag for J'ouvert with clothes you don't mind getting covered in paint or mud — and save your best look for Parade Day when the cameras come out.
